I owned the 80-400 VR II, which is excellent between 70-250mm, but not that brilliant in the long end!

I have no problems using the 80-400mm f5.6 VR II with any of the three Nikon teleconverters on my D750 and D7200 cameras. With the 1.4x you have a 560mm f8 lens which is only 1/2 stop less than the 150-600mm lenses but does not require shooting with it on a bean bag or monopod.

I would not buy a lens that I was not going to use after the safari. Better then to rent a lens for the trip and get exactly what you need.
