Top of the list would be a 200-400mm though that assumes you have something like a 70-200mm to use as well. The 80-400mm VR II has the advantage of being light enough to shoot hand held as compared to the 200-400mm or one of the 150-600mm lenses.

I have no problems using the 80-400mm f5.6 VR II with any of the three Nikon teleconverters on my D750 and D7200 cameras. With the 1.4x you have a 560mm f8 lens which is only 1/2 stop less than the 150-600mm lenses but does not require shooting with it on a bean bag or monopod.

I would not buy a lens that I was not going to use after the safari. Better then to rent a lens for the trip and get exactly what you need.
