Back focus button tutorial

Can someone please drag me out of my obvious state of ignorance and illuminate me on what is this back focus button on the E-M1, and how does it work?

The setting is here:

What this changes is, you don't focus with a half-press of the shutter button any more, but instead you use the AEL/AFL button to focus.

This allows for greater flexibility, because you decide when you focus and it doesn't have to coincide with you getting ready for a shot. For example, when framing something and then firing multiple shots, you don't get AF reconfirming all the time.

Personally, I have set Fn2 to switch between MF and AF, and find it much more convenient to switch off AF with that when I want to keep my focus setting between shots. The default, for me, is AF for every shot. But I only found that out once I had tried back button focusing
