I think the Nikkor may be a bit-- just a hair sharper than the
Canon. With that being said, I've seen super sharp images from the
Canon lens as well.

But I don't think the differences you are seeing are on the lens
level, IMO.

Theree are quite some differences between individual samples. Canon in particular seem to have real QC problems. I don't know if this is also true of Nikon. Anyway, variablity seems great enough to render marginal differences in sharpness academic.
