Re: Best lenses for cruise/ vacation Istanbul, Myconos, Valetta, Pompei & Rome

First off, I'm strictly an amateur and I have a T2i with 10-22, 15-85IS, and 70-300IS. I hate changing lenses, but you do what you have to do to get a shot. We just came back from a Western Mediterranean Cruise with stops in Naples, Florence, Rome (among others). I used the 15-85IS for the majority (80%) of my shots and never really wanted to go any longer than 85 with the rare exception of driving along the Amalfi coast where a longer lens would've been useful for some shots. IS REALLY REALLY helped as 1) I hate flash and 2) flash is prohibited in some museums, so I can't imagine not having a lens without IS.

However, as much as I hate changing lenses, I'm really glad I had my 10-22. I'd say I used that for the other 20% of the time I wasn't using my 15-85IS. With the narrowness of the streets and the tight quarters of some of the venues, I was constantly at the wide end of my 15-85 and several shots I could only have gotten with my 10-22.

So, in general, wider is better and IS is better. I'd choose the 16-35 vs. the 24-70, but that's just me. Good luck and have fun.
