Think about the cost of our old XT's the way you do your computers. Expendables. I have two old laptops which I now refer to as "boat anchor one" and "boat anchor two".

Oh I hear you, Stuart. Lot's of 'boat anchors' we use to go onto better stuff later. Lot's of money under the bridge too. The crazy thing is that the EOS350D was so much better than the 300D - I still have both but in the original boxes. My only regret is spending $369 plus tx's for a 96MB Sandisk CF card.

Ow! Yeah, I moved a 1TB drive from an external enclosure into the case on the weekend, and while digging around for some screws in the big box of cables and stuff I found two old 40GB drives that probably cost more in real terms than 1TB does now.

And can you use those old 40 GB drives now in a toaster or external enclosure?

Maybe, but I have thumbdrives that hold near as much, so I wouldn't try.

I found a couple myself and they are useless now. I had to destroy them.

Yeah, IME spinners fail fast when you don't use them.
