A snapshot taken with an iPhone or a Canon 1Dx will look around the same when posted on Facebook.

I don't think that's exactly true. Good photos still look good on Facebook and there is a big difference. People notice immediately side-by-side. The problem is that most of the pictures are phone pictures of varying degrees of crapiness and people just get used to it - especially since so many pictures posted are crappy even for a cell phone picture.

The dearth of real camera stores in the US combined with the fact that Best Buy, etc. don't carry them is the issue in the US. And it's super-easy for folks to go to one of these places and buy a Canon or a Nikon - you don't have to know anything about cameras to recognize an SLR and say to yourself "now that must take good pictures". Of course a lot of these folks can't fathom all the controls on an SLR and just use them in point-and-shoot mode but they still get way better results than their phone. I would guess even the Sony mirrorless stuff they have at Best Buy is a tough sell next to the SLRs. Personally I think something like the E-M5 or GH4 could do quite well in that environment - they look just like SLRs and work just like SLRs (well, more or less of course) but are way more portable and way more appropriate for the type of use they'll see. (Not that an M4/3 is any better/worse as a point and shoot that an SLR, just that you don't need a big SLR to take snapshots....)
