Originally from Holland, I have been living in China for eight years now - most of that time in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. I came here to study martial arts and explore. The latter of these brought me into photography (although I had always enjoyed it). I have travelled extensively throughout the southwestern corner of the country, covering over 60.000km by motorbike so far. This year I have been on some particularly epic journeys and am quite pleased that I was able to capture some images along the way.
This was a European colonial area near the border with Guangdong.
The only place that I've seen Rickshaws.

Every other town has their own KFC copy using almost every letter of the alphabet. The best (and most humourous) of these was DFC, in my wife's remote county in western Guangxi. I hate fast food, but we often stop at these to get a soft serve ice cream and relieve ourselves in the comfort of the Aircon, momentarily escaping the torturous humidity. My how the times have caught up.
Taking a ferry over the swollen Hongshuihe (the main source for the Pearl River) was epic.
My friend Robert, from Scotland, barely got his bigger bike onboard.

We drove through cold torrential rainstorms and thunder and lightning at high altitude, but when the storm cleared it had all been worth it.

I was taking a shitty photo of an ancient pagoda when I noticed all of the "birds" gathering behind me. I turned around and made a crazy noise to attract their attention and got the shot. Works every time and not only with children.
F*** me.. no power lines! (they usually ruin potential wide shots of villages)
The inside of the wooden towers, called Gulou, that can be seen in some of the other photos often have amazing artwork in them.

It's a cheap, Chinese bike, but it withstood some of the worst "roads" that I've ever seen. We were driving in 1st gear for the last 80-100km of the first day of this particular trip through Guizhou province. By the time we found a hotel just before midnight, our bodies were just lumps of battered flesh.
Every bigger town has their own version of taxis. This county in far western Hunan province had the funniest I've seen yet.

Scenes like this were around every corner, but the lighting didn't always cooperate.
If that isn't contrast I don't know what is..

Well, I hope that you all enjoyed these. I'm still getting to know the camera and I'm going on another trip next week to get my visa, so expect more.
