Upgrade from 7D, or complement with smaller one?

Hi,

I have an old 6MP Maxxum 7D that I've never really used much due to size (especially when taking bag with lenses etc), and we're about to go out West camping for a few weeks and I'm wondering what new camera I should get to either replace or complement the 7D.

Back then 6MP was supposedly plenty for online and prints up to 8x10, has that changed? Modern cameras go into the 20-30MP and beyond range, but do you really get better pictures with them unless you need large prints or want to do some serious cropping/enlargement? I don't want to "upgrade" to a new camera only to find out that the pics aren't any better.

What about other technologies such as AF, metering, etc (I can live without wifi, nfc, gps), have they improved much?

If I can get by with the 7D a bit longer I could add a smaller camera such as the Leica typ 109 that has a 24-75 mm zoom, or I could replace the 7D with a Sony A7 mirrorless camera (or similar since my old lenses would not work without an adapter anyway), or buy a Sony DSLR that lets me use my existing lenses and be a significant upgrade over the 7D (the a99?).

For reference, my lenses are KM AF DT 18-70mm 3.5-5.6, Minolta AF 50mm 1.7, and a Tamron AF 70-300mm 4-5.6

Appreciate any advice,

Frank
