Susan, if you want to get a great beginner SLR, try the SL1. I own one and love it. Fits the hand well, unless yours are very large. It's light, quick, has a great touchscreen and the same sensor as the t5i. It is offered sometimes in a kit with the 18-55 STM and the 55-250 STM, both sharp and image stabilized. I also bought mine from the Canon store refurbished, and it came to me in like new condition (really untouched).

Personally, I prefer Canon colors, menus, lenses, and other system attributes to Nikon or any other system. I have tried many Olympus, Panasonic, Nikon, and Sony cameras, but keep coming back to Canon.
