Would it be worth going from the Panasonic 14-42mm kit lens to the 14-140mm f3.5 for $200 extra?

The original Panasonic 14-42 is not as good as the newer version. You don't say which you are referring to. But either of those is in the $100 to $150 range, while the 14-140 f/3.5 is currently $499 at B&H. So first of all, if you can upgrade from the 14-42 to the 14-140 f/3.5 for only $200, that's a screaming good deal.

I had the 14-42 v.II and the 45-150, sold the latter when I got the 14-140, which is a very good superzoom and oh-so-convenient for outdoor travel use. I'm glad I got it. I've kept the 14-42 for occasional use indoors when I want a compact zoom with flash (parties, etc.). It's smaller and lighter than the 14-140, and there's no need for the 43-140 part of that lens indoors.

But if you want a wide-ranging zoom for outdoor use, I'd recommend the 14-140. Here are some examples I posted in another thread at 14, 40, and 140mm: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/55866549
