Focus hunting issue Pentax DA 16-85

Very happy with the optical performance of my new 16-85, but it appears to have a fault with the AF. It has an occasional tendency to slip into what I would call a 'locked in hunting mode' where the AF cycles back and forth either side of the correct position endlessly, and using the focus ring to over-ride has no effect, the focus indicator continues flashing.

It happens out of doors with perfectly normal targets, single point AF and single shot mode. Seems to be more prevalent at short focal lengths and distances of around 2-5 meters. Operating with my K-5II body.

Should emphasise that this is not the normal hunting one might expect from an AF system, and it's nothing to do with lack of light or contrast in the target.

I'm returning the lens, but am curious if anyone else has had similar experiences with their copy?
