T2i+420EX. HELP needed ASAP.

I've been asked to take some pictures of my grand-daughter's HS graduation tonight.  Being home schooled, the ceremony is in a church.  I have never been there, and won't be until the time of the ceremony.  So I'm asking you for camera settings that might be average or decent enough to get good shots.  I assume that the ceiling is way too high for any bounce flash possibilities.

Depending on just how close I can get to the "action" (the actual presentation of the diploma), I have either a Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens or a Canon 70-200 f4 IS USM lens.

This is basically all the info that I have.  That said, do you feel I could take the shots without a flash at all..maintaining a higher ISO, and maybe f4 on either lens?  I would prefer this, but just don't know the situation well enough, and won't, until "show time". But if not, and you'd advise a flash, what camera and flash settings would you recommend knowing what (little) I know about the interior lighting.  Is there some sort of fail-safe setting?

By the way, I have never used a shoe mounted flash before.

Thanks

Bob
