Now why the heck have you left it at original firmware? You are missing out on http://dl01.olympus-imaging.com/ww/ud2/ENU/0001/1080/index06a.html and of that the 0 second anti-shock is absolutely essential.

I think some time back with another brand the update was said to cause problems - at least it was recommended here to wait for a later revision.

Just got the P5 48 hours ago. Hence my questions.

If you don't follow the rules carefully then there is a chance of a problem, but so far for me with many bodies and many many updates it has all gone smoothly.

Rules at http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/software/camera/cameraupdate.cfm and I use Olympus Viewer 3 as the gateway as it auto loads the Updater program anyway. Oly Viewer is at http://support.olympus-imaging.com/ov3download/

The firmware latest levels are found from here to see whether to connect your camera/lens etc to get it updated http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/software/firm/e1/

Never lose that special USB cable that came in the box, mark it well so it stays with the camera. Use it for updates and also transfers to/from card if needed.

All those links and more on my links page http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/olyepl1/03-epl1-links.html

See the true shot count of your camera http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/olyepl1/12-epl1-shotcount.html usually new bodies are in the 50-150 range out of the box, some can be a bit higher or lower counts.
