Heheh... I was always more active here than the "other" place. I'm
just waiting for their new camera to come out, probably this fall.
And then we'll see... :-]
I never felt the "other" place was as friendly as here. Glad to see you've stuck around

.
The V1 isn't mine. I always manage to borrow lately. That way, I
can go around with two cameras, using either for what I feel is the
best job for it.
You sure must have a nice friend. Weren't you borrowing the 717 or 707 as well? But you're lucky to have access on such a regular basis.
I like the V1, for what it is. It's small. It produces nice
sharpened 5MP images. White balance could be better both in Auto
and in the presets, but I've always been accustomed to using the
One-push method anyway. That works fine.
Yes, I agree. I never had really high expectations for the V1 given my other experiences with compacts so have been pleasantly surprised. I haven't noticed serious AWB problems, but perhaps they are there and they just don't bother me. I did have WB problems in the fish market, but I really think it was because of the mix of fluorescent and incandescent lighting. Should have set the WB myself, but would have been hard given the circumstances.
I don't like being without some sort of swivel. Don't like that at
all. So the V1, while not "for ME" is a nice contender. And there
are plenty of accessories for it. Always a plus for the folks that
want to effectively increase its size again. ;-)
Funny, I've never had a swivel, so I don't know what I'm missing. But I do love the movable aspect of the 717 body (or is is the lens that moves?). It has made taking pics in odd positions much easier. And yes, the V1 has suddenly gotten bigger, but I'm still planning to carry it in my purse without accessories and just bring the lenses and flash along when I think I will need them. So not bigger all the time

).
Too bad about the view. Is that because there's nothing to see in
Turkey, or is it because of the apartment that you'll have?
There's lots to see in Turkey -- it's a beautiful and fascinating country, and I'm really looking forward to capturing it in digital instead of the film I used last time. But all embassy staff except the ambassador and deputy chief of mission must live in apartments in Ankara. Last time we had a beautiful view of the city (until they built a tower in front of us), so maybe we'll luck out again. I'm afraid I've been spoiled in Okinawa; because my husband is consul general, we live in an enormous representational house that can accommodate parties for 200 people or more, and we're situated on the top of a hill with a spectacular view. Don't know how I will be able to go back to being just a "regular" person again -- no live-in help, no 24-hour guard, no car and driver, no VIP treatment... what ever will I do??

)) (BTW I'm kidding -- it's been quite an experience, but I'm sure I can manage the return to "normal" life quite well.)
Where will you get your cameras in Turkey!??
Well, that indeed will be a problem. I can't remember any big camera stores in Ankara where I can go in and play with the latest toys! Plus they are very expensive there. Guess I will have to order online like everybody else. But I am planning to continue working for my Okinawan company, and they are trying to find a way for me to return quarterly prior to each publication, so if that occurs, then I can just keep doing business with Kitamura Camera here.
