Changing the focus distance of a lens.

So I looked into some DYI  macro setups, and stumbled upon a guide that  said I could use the front element of an old lens mounted via a reverse ring on my kit lens. This works quite well, but what really intrigued me is that  even with the lens focused at infinite, the  actual focus distance is  a few centimenters from the lens.  This got me wondering if there is a way to reverse mount an element on my lens and make the lens focus on a few meters away from the lens when focused to infinity and  how would this affect other aspects of the image such as DOF.

Has anyone had any experience with this before ? I tried searching the web but I got no results besides the DYI macro  setup.
