Hi
I want to get a silent lens to use for filming video of live performances
The whir while my lenses focus is very annoying
What lens do you recommend for filing in decent lighting?
I was thinking the short 40MM but I have a conflict with my existing lenses:
50 mm Canon 1.8
35/105 Canon 3.5/4.5
17-50 Tamron 2.8
I have buying an STM lens that covers the same ground as what I have
Thoughts? and Thanks
The 18-135 STM was built from the ground up for video. It has a really nice range and is completely silent. It also has a feature called "Dynamic Image Stabilization" for shooting video on the move (it kicks in automatically). The other lenses you mention are indeed not silent (incl the 40 STM).
Ditto.
Don't worry about "covering the same ground" (focal lengths) as what you have, because what you have doesn't suit your video needs.
While 2/3 stop slower over the same focal lengths, the 18-135 STM has stabilization and would be a good replacement for the good-in-its-day (1987) but dated EF 35-105 f/3.5-4.5. Its focal length range is much better suited to your "crop" camera, you can carry one lens instead of two (17-50/2.8 + 35-105/3.5-4.5)
A less pricey alternative to "test the waters" would be the EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM.
IMHO, YMMV
thanks its a good idea
i don't film much but have to this weekend I'm going to try to manual focus
