Auto mode is just that: automatic. YOU don't have much control at all. Once you get out of auto mode you will notice the quality of your photos get better as you are able to control what the images look like instead of the camera telling you what they should look like

There are basically 3 settings that control how your photo looks: Aperture, Shutter speed, ISO

S mode allows you to choose the shutter speed, the camera will choose the other 2. Pick this mode if you want to freeze motion or allow it to blur (like running water).

A mode allows you to choose the aperture, the camera will choose the other 2. Pick this mode if you want to control how shallow or deep your depth of field is (how little or how much is in focus).

You will find your 300M pretty amazing once you take control of the camera and not let it control you...so to speak
