I did go walking around in the sun for about 45 minutes with just the SX60. (Sort of a "what if I were out walking around with just this camera?" experiment.) Absolutely pleased. It's totally a better camera all the way around than the SX40... not that my 40 *needs* to be put out to pasture yet, of course.

And I noticed, DonA2, that we have both progressed through this line of cameras in exactly the same way! The S2, SX10, SX40... I guess that means I'll eventually need the SX60 just to keep the pattern.

Yes indeed. You must get that SX60 now that you have been exposed. I do believe that if one can afford this camera AND travel, by all means go for it. The SX40 still can do backup duty and that will be what I intend to keep mine for.

As I tend to skip a year or 2 to make any noted progress the next upgrade should be the SX80 or SX100. There were a few reasons to go for the SX60 besides the obvious. One was the battery. Same as used for the SX40. The other was the Canon hot-shoe flash. I thought the lens hood would also fit. It does but would vignette that super wide angle. Ordered one and a unipod.

Have a nice vacation --with that SX60.
