CF failed and so did recovery

Here's the sequence of events:

1. Shot some frames this afternoon (D200, SanDisk Ultra II 4GB card)
2. Chimped a bit, everything seemed normal
3. Popped the card into my Transcend usb 3 reader
4. Windows 8 displayed a popup that said there was a problem with the file system on the card, asks if I want to repair it
5. I said yes (possibly the fatal error, though it's worked in the past)
6. Windows reports it cannot repair
7. Windows now says the card needs to be formatted. I decline.
8. Recuva can't read the card
9. The camera cannot read the card and cannot format the card
10. Go back to Windows and do a full format
11. Card now has a file system but Recuva finds no evidence file remnants
12. No great loss, just some personal macro and springtime shots, BUT...

What if this had been real work? None of my current cameras have dual card slots. This is the first time in 10 years of digital shooting that I've lost any files and it's not a good feeling.

Thoughts on what I might have done differently?

PS: I'm posting this on more than one site to cast a wide net on this one.
