NX500 (and NX1?) autofocus suggestion: Speed Priority (but not Release Priority)
3

Overall, I'm pleased with the NX500's autofocus performance. However, in some circumstances, the AF accuracy is spotty.  One of those situations seems to be when the subject is backlit, or when the background is bright and high contrast.  In those situations, I have found that the NX500 often focuses on the background, even when the AF point appears to be tracking the subject.  I don't know if that has happened to you too.

I had been shooting with AF Release Priority set to Focus Auto or Focus Accuracy Priority.  I found it frustrating that the camera would still shoot unfocused shots even with Accuracy Priority.  I hypothesized that the reason the NX500 was sometimes shooting the background is because Accuracy Priority uses both phase detection and contrast detection, and because the background is higher contrast, the contrast detection causes the NX500 to focus on the background.  So I tried using Focus - Speed Priority (NOT release priority).  In Speed Priority mode, the NX500 uses phase detection only.  So far, with this setting, it seems to be able to focus on backlit subjects more accurately.  Just wanted to share this setting that somewhat counter-intuitively works for me.

Best regards,

Mic
