Reset G12 w/o access to LCD?

My G12 suddenly stopped working correctly for no apparent reason - it wasn't dropped, hit by anything, exposed to moisture, etc. When I hit the power button I can see that the backlight on the LCD comes on but it remains blank. Also, the lens doesn't extend until the first time I hit the shutter release. The LCD remains blank when I hit the DISP, MENU or play buttons. Tapping the power button again will retract the lens and turn off the backlight.

It does still take pictures, though not movies.

I was hoping that resetting the camera would fix it, but I haven't found a way to do that without going through an LCD menu (which I can't see since the LCD is blank). I have tried all the power-on button sequences I can think of (like holding the shutter release or play buttons down while powering-on the camera) but they are either incorrect or ineffective. The manual doesn't reveal any button presses that reset the camera without using the LCD.

Internet searches say to do things like power-cycle the camera quickly to reset it, or press the shutter release a bunch of times rapidly without a card plugged in, or leave the battery out for 15 minutes to 24 hours, but none of them appear effective.

Is there some way to reset this camera other than via the LCD? Or do I just need to bite the bullet and take it in for repairs?

Thanks. --Gary
