I missed this thread while on holiday, but I feel it's just worth echoing the message from the OP. The Tamron is an exceptional UWA lens optically (it outperforms my copy of the 14-24, though bear in mind I do landscape and interiors with UWA, not astro). It's a bit slower to focus than the 14-24, and a touch heavier, but I'm very happy I bought one based on its results thus far.
