Does cropping "improve" FF lens performance?

Most lens reviews reveal that corners are where lenses have the most trouble maintaining sharpness. Frequently the review will state that sharpness is great in the center wide open, but you have to stop down to get consistent corner sharpness. Paying the big bucks for high-end lenses improves this somewhat, but I still see corner softening as a factor in most all lenses.

Does using a FF lens on a crop body improve the performance of that FF lens since the corners are more cropped than when used on a FF body? Are you effectively chopping the end off of the MTF chart, thus improving the performance when cropped?

I know there are other reasons to buy a FF lens like future compatibility with a FF body and most manufacturers only make their high end glass in full frame, but this is more of a general question.
