Some editorial photos with Canon's new 11-24 f/4
3

I received the new Canon 11-24 f/4 on Friday, and last night (Saturday) I used it on a few shots covering the Scripps Howard spelling bee at Houston Public Media. I was curious how this lens would handle in the field on a real world assignment. These are straight out of camera full-sized jpegs, tungsten balance, handheld. The only tweak is I brought the shadows up just a touch so we could see a little more.

O.K., so the photos themselves are no great shakes, and I probably could have done the same job with the 16-35 f/4L IS, but I was curious to use this massive super wide angle in the field on a real assignment. I'm pretty pleased with the down and dirty handling of this lens--it genuinely felt like any other pro lens. It does overbalance a bit because it is so hefty, even on a 5D III with a grip, but otherwise it was surprisingly easy to maneuver and work in tight and hectic conditions.

I still feel that the main market for this lens is going to be architectural, landscape and fine art photographers, but I am sorta considering adding it to my 24-70 f/2.8 II and 70-200 f/2.8L IS II lineup as a smooth transition from 11mm all the way to 200mm.
