The mechanical flapping mirror seems to have reached its physical limit around 11 fps, with barely an improvement over previous generation cameras.

Now that Nikon V3 has 20 fps continuous focus, will Nikon pro customers start demanding "a full-frame version of the V3"? And will Nikon listen? Why force customers into a tiny sensor to get higher fps?

Sony has already prototyped full-frame mirrorless in the consumer grade (aka "beta-tester") A7/A7R. Everyone knows Sony and Nikon have a cozy relationship. Will they license the technology?

Flanking from the high-end would seem like a safe way for Nikon to introduce large-sensor mirrorless without cannibalizing DSLR sales. A mirrorless D5 with 20 fps C-AF capability could sell even higher than the D4 with its measly 11 fps.

Well let me ask you this: Will the next model of the Ford F250 have jet engines & wings?

If you know the answer to that then you know how stupid your question was. A line of cameras only evolves on the inside, the body stays as identical as possible.

Not a good analogy. A truck becoming an airplane is a much larger leap than a camera line getting rid of the mirror.

And your comment about the insides changing but the body staying the same - the D5 could actually be mirrorless AND the external body not change.

So back to studying for you.

And for the record - I DON'T think the D5 will be mirrorless. But, if it does happen, it isn't quite the same thing as Ford turning the F250 into an airplane.

It kind of is, they would rather start a whole new line & quit with the D line, maybe pick it up as "D50" but they would never name it the D5 as it would NOT be a D5 because it does not folllow the rest of the line.
