7-14, 20 & 45

In the film days when I shot Contax, it would have been 21mm, 35, and 85mm, preferably fast glass. I always figured I could do 80% of my work with just a fast 35mm and 85mm. When I switched to Canon for digital, I got a 35mm f2 and 100mm f2 and covered wide with a 17-40 f4L. Now I've got an m43 20mm f1.7 and 45mm f1.8, complemented by a 7-14 f4. Thought about adding a 12mm f2, but I find that with my GX7's IBIS my 7-14mm f4 does nicely even in low light, and IQ is comparable to the prime. So, my current kit closely mirrors what I had with Canon FF DSLRs (except the 7-14 and 20 are far sharper at the edges when wide open than my Canon 17-40 and 35 ever were).

I find the "normal" perspective of a 50 (135) / 25 (m43) boring when I'm shooting, and in the many years when I owned one I used it little. The standard "wide" 28/14 always felt like a compromise to me. When I want to go wide, 28 is too much like 35, so I prefer 24 or 21 equivalent.

I'm sticking with the 20mm rather than getting a 17mm for three reasons. First, the 20's IQ is superb. Second, the price is very reasonable. Third, a semi-wide pancake makes a versatile and compact walkabout lens. Initially, I thought I'd miss the wider perspective of a 17, but the 20 has grown on me thanks to its freedom from WA perspective distortion. It's a great lens for environmental portraits.

My 45 fills the short tele role nicely, and f1.8 gives me subject separation from the background when I want it.
