Don,

thank you for your response and information and thoughtful comments. I really do like how the end photo looks, except for the train around his face. I will try again to edit this and see if I can do a better job getting rid of the noise. I believe I did use the raw file for this edit, but that will definitely be the plan when I re-edit. It will make a lovely print, and if I print it on canvas, then I guess a little noise won't be that noticeable.

I tend forget a lot of little things when stressed in the moment. Maybe I'm getting old, maybe I just have baby brain. LOL. I don't know, but when pressured I forget to check all the things I should check. Will have to work on that. Yes, I should have filled the frame with him to begin with and not used a wider frame in the hopes that I would catch something. It isn't like he would stand still and pose for me, though, and I lost my planning brain in the process of just "trying to capture him looking towards me and smiling even". Live and learn.

Appreciate all the feedback. Will work on this photo again and see if I can get a better edit out of it. I have other fabulous images of him, just not like this, on the beach. Oh well.

Thank you for your help.

Diane

These are two photos that I've done with my 6D. Bit better job I think, as I was able to focus and think clearly and not so stressed.

Diane,

I apologize if I didn't make it clear: I think there is nothing wrong with your composition choices. You have a fine eye for a good photo. The issue is to work within the constraints of the camera. The DSLR is great if you have the will to carry the lenses (I did for film cameras for years so I know the drill). The superzoom is great when the objective is to have a camera ready in a hurry without a change of lens to shoot in reasonable lighting conditions. For instance, the superzoom is what I want when I'm shooting my grandchildren at play.
