I just took possession of a mint condition 60mm AF f/2.8D Micro and have a quick question.

Despite being an f/2.8 lens, if focusing closely the aperture will vary down to f/5 at the closest focusing distance. Is this normal for this lens?

I'm using Aperture priority mode, set f/2.8 and was playing around shooting stuff. I noticed that the closer I got, the smaller the aperture was. For the most part, it was always f/2.8 unless I was into the macro range of the lens then it varied with distance.

Other than that, the thing is mint. It literally looks like it's never been used. So, I'm assuming this is normal behavior but just wanted to check with the community of knowledge first.

Thanks

Yes, this is totally normal. My Tokina 100mm Macro behaves the same way. These websites will explain it in detail:
