I got tired of the focus square moving off center when I really did want it to so my solution was to turn off touch AF and touch pad AF in the touch settings menu. This removes the touch focusing from the touch screen but leaves everything else. This might be something you would like.
Also, set up this way you still have access to touch shutter operation via the < fly out function screen. I do occasionally like to use the touch shutter function because it really works well so I'm glad its so easily accessed.
Dear Randy, may be you can try the following way and to keep Touch Pad AF active:
If the focus box would have been moved away from the center (by your will or accident), if the box was in yellow color with 4 outward points (if not, touch anywhere on LCD to move the focus again making it turning yellow), hit the "Delete/Bin" key. The focus box would return to the center.
Of course, Touch Shutter function must be disable in advance. I set Touch Shutter in soft key and so could be activate/deactivate on fly.
Thanks alcelc. I'll archive your tip in case I ever decide to use Touch Pad AF, I think it would make use of touch AF much less annoying. At the moment I don't use it that way but I do use the Touch shutter function and as you say it easy to access on the fly. Since Touch shutter also causes re-focus prior to the shutter tripping it works very well for me on the rare occasions when my focal point is off center.
