I agree the fly by wire focusing is a weak point of the lens as it also did not resolve the relatively slow focus of the 85L II - making it difficult to use the 85 L II for sports etc. even if this was what Canon intended when they made the II version.

Here Canon seems to have gone for a adjustment of the overall design in stead of a completely new construction - which of course would have been much more expensive.
