Help: I love M43 but on the edge

A pro event shooter's low-light POV

I switched from FF to m43 because, aside from shooting primarily low-light events, I also travel & hike a lot, and I found that m43 covers all these bases nicely for my purposes. I do not do birds or sports.

m43 gives me about a one-stop lower ISO ceiling (3200) than my old FF kit (6400), but this really isn't an issue for me in my low-light event work because

  • I often use off-camera flash
  • I use fast primes as well as f2.8 zooms
  • ISO 3200 suffices
  • Most of my corporate event photos go straight to web

In addition, I find the AF & EVF superior in low light.

If you're having trouble with low-light IQ, or not getting focus as shallow as you want, you probably just need faster lenses.

Take a look at the "Dilnoza" wedding gallery in my site's "weddings" section and the "Jabbar" gallery in the "recent work" section and see how these match up with the conditions in which you work and the results you're looking for. "Dilnoza" was shot with a G3 & GX1, "Jabbar" with a G6 & GX7.

As others have suggested, it might be useful for you to develop strategies to deal with what you perceive as m43 weaknesses rather than jumping to another format in hopes that it will solve all your problems (it won't).

As for birding, well, that's a special case, and I'll leave it to others with interest & experience in this area to chime in. My impression is that you might be well-served there by, say, a 7D and a long zoom, but some folks around here have shown stunning photos made with m43 and a 70-300 or 100-300.
