Pixels per duck ...
3

I wrote the "duck pixel" diatribe more than a decade ago, because folks were believing that a "crop sensor" was magically giving them more reach. I pointed out that with a given lens (my "big gun" at the time was the 100-400L) the image of the duck was the same physical size on ANY sensor (or film, which was still widely used at the time), and what mattered was how many pixels described the duck - the pixel density - and not the physical size of the imager, as any image can be arbitrarily cropped.

That still applies, of course: cropping the image gains ZERO "reach". Increasing the pixel density does (to the extent that your lens can resolve the subject, not an issue then, definitely an issue  with 50 megapixels!)

As to the "crop" in the new camera being jpeg only, I'd be OK with that. Perhaps it will mark the RAW file with "16:9", "1.6", "APS-C", or some other tag that Canon's software can understand (and, eventually, everyone else's). By keeping the RAW file intact, the photographer has some room to correct framing errors (or even judgement errors by choosing a sub-optimal size and aspect ratio!)
