Canon G7X from an RX100 user's perspective

Some notes on the Canon G7X vs the Sony RX100(m1)

First things first: both cameras need a grip (I find wandering straps annoying.) I got one right away (the Richard Franiec one, quite popular in this forum). Handles much better now!

Things I like on the Canon:

  • The lens, of course. Wider range and max. aperture.
  • Built-in ND filter!
  • I can remap the red “movie” button to do something actually useful!
  • Conveniently-placed exposure compensation dial: with the RX100 I rarely used it at all, because it required complicated manipulations. Very straightforward on the Canon.
  • Touch-screen for focusing and general menu interaction. This feature is quite convenient.
  • Click-stops on the lens ring, good to have but a bit loud for my taste.
  • Tilting screen (the RX100m2 and m3 also have it); good for low-PoV pictures.

Things I prefer on the Sony:

  • “Bendable” flash (for bounce). The canon’s is always head-on, which makes it much less useful.
  • MicroUSB charging: it’s a pain to have to carry a charger when you could just do it off a regular PC USB port.
  • Shiftable P mode; I haven’t figure out how to do this on the G7X.
  • Quiet operation of the lens ring. The Canon’s ring feels a bit rough.

So far I’m quite satisfied with it (about 3 weeks now).
