It's actually very much like photography

I drove a 2-wheel drive car, rear wheel drive at that, through two consecutive winters where extended ice storms covered everything with inches of ice - combined with hilly terrain. The biggest hazard was getting run over by 4-wheel drive trucks spinning end-for-end in my rear view mirror.

I also unstuck any and all vehicle in the sloping parking lot in front of the business in which I worked, and ferried fellow employees home in my rear wheel drive car - some of whom had 4WD vehicle themselves.

Having raced for 20 years, I have nothing but respect for the incredibly talented rally drivers from the Scandinavian countries. But these guys can work their wonders in 2-wheel drive cars as well.. Just like photography, it's 95% operator skill, and 5% equipment. When you lack that first 95 the rest is largely academic.

In the US society has been touting driving really slowly as the only driving skill for several generations now. It's pure comedy - although sometimes a tragic one - when it snows regardless of the number of driven wheels involved. I'm coming off of 2+ days with no power but I made my 60-mile commute every day last week despite the ice - in my 2 wheel drive car.
