Submersible Cameras a Gimmick Too

So what isn't a gimmick?  Couldn't we all prosper a bit more by coming up with more clever gimmicks?  Trouble comes when we run out of gimmicks!

The various rugged and tough cameras are supposed to survive submersion to 10 meters or more.

Yes, maybe a few times.  Maybe if you clean the seals meticulously after each submersion.  Maybe if no sand or micro grit does not compromise the seals.  Maybe if no salt water somehow dribbles into one of the seams or the flap the covers the ports, card slot, or battery chamber.  Maybe if you avoid the ocean and use it only occasionally in the kiddie pool.

Warranty?  Ho ho ho.  Does one really care about getting $250-$250 money back?  The real problem is that the camera fails on a trip and you've only the pics or video you shot before it went kaput.

Marine enclosures offer some protection.  Be prepared to pay, though.  And they too require some care.

Given the bad light and opaque conditions in most coastal waters, a disposable single use submersible camera (or two) may be a smarter approach.
