Re: Weather Sealing is a Gimmick.

you say that because you dont have any particular need for it.

my sony nex7 shorted twice, both times as i got hit for less than 10 seconds of monsoon rain. it wouldnt even turn on.

on my weather sealed bodies i use... weather sealed lenses, particularly if shooting outdoors. i can guarantee you it is far from a gimmick. my em1 can shoot thru torrential rain. i even run it thru tap water to clean, with lense on. it will power on and it will shoot.

most electronic can stand some or even heavy humidity. weather sealing is certainly not proof against submersion but it is proof against unavoidable rain and unexpected or expected moisture beyond "humidity".

you are right that modern electronics are pretty robust but you seem to discount more extreme conditions other ppl may be shooting in.

my experience with non sealed cameras isn't unique. plenty of ppl have had their gear just stop functioning even in light rain. and before you say "dont shoot in rain", i will say i dont ever intend to shoot in rain. if i am shooting outdoors in monsoon season, the rain comes in an instant and when it comes, it's heavy. it takes as little as 5 seconds to completely drench everything on you to the skin and thru non-weather resistant bags. over here, when it rains it can take as little as a couple minutes to flood even with large storm drains (singapore).
