Attach filter to rear of M39 lens?

I was considering, as part of a project, if it would be possible to mount a 39mm filter on the rear of a M39 lens? I do not want to interfere significantly with the flange distance so wide adapters are not a possibility.  From some quick research it looks like the filter and mount would not thread together since they have different pitches:

39mm lens has a 0.5mm pitch (50.8 tpi)

M39 mount has a 0.977mm pitch (26 tpi)

Am I right to assume this would not work?

Thanks in advance,
