Re: WilbaW - Spider macro

Here's what I'd do to a good shot of a guy like that -

  • f/13. You can see some diffraction coming in from f/11, but it's very easy to deal with at f/13. I'd only use f/16 if DOF was the highest priority.
  • Flash at max. sync. shutter. You don't need much flash power for macro (I use a diffused 270EX II, see http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/55195826). The duration of the flash is much shorter than the mechanical shutter, so it freezes motion blur better than the shutter ever can. You can use a flash off the body with a cable, radio triggers, or with the Canon wireless system on later bodies, or even the on-board flash with a home-made diffuser or ring thingy.
  • ISO 100. The flash gives you all the light you need, even at these tight apertures.
  • Get closer! I found images from the 450D quite limited in how far you can crop, so you need to fill the frame. Check out the Macro section of the unofficial Rebel Talk FAQ for tips on how to go beyond 1:1 (I'd go for extension tubes with the 60mm).
  • Look him in the eye. It's easy to get macros looking down on the subject (and that's fine if that's what you want), but they get dramatic if it looks face-to-face.
  • Try AI Servo with a single AF point, including the off-centre ones. It works fantastically well with a USM lens like the 60 and bodies like the 60D, 70D, and 7D, and should with the 450D but I can't guarantee it.
  • Shoot raw and work on your sharpening so you get the most out of the slightly soft images you'll be getting.

Have a go and show us your progress.
