Give me reasons NOT to buy 1Ds

You lost me... you disabled what?
I didn't Enable the quiet mode on the 1D, the first thing I checked after DavidP mentioned it .. it would seem that either the 1DS comes with it enabled or Paul enabled it..

Otherwise, absolutely I would snatch one up in a heartbeat.

The 1Ds is highly recommended over any other digital SLR - if you can afford it.
Hi,

yes, it sounds stupid but i think its the best way to find out if
you have any problems and why i shouldn't fork out on the canon eos
1ds

thanks alot

Ah, OK. Actually, I think it's one of the PF's that you have to activate via the computer before you can access it.

It's a very noticeable difference in sound... more of a click-whirr instead of a click-CLACK.

Its heavy, big, expensive, will standout, and you need the best glass for it.

My feeble justification to myself NOT to buy the 1Ds is that it still uses a NiMH battery. They're sure to come out with a Li-Ion one eventually.

Really weak excuse, but it's barely held me back so far. Barely ;)

1) If you don't have a digital camera and loads of experience with it and proper workflow. This camera has a LOT of controls, and you need to know what they do to get the full use from the camera. Make sure you've used a 10D or similar, and/or a 1D to it's fullest potential, and need the extra information.

2) If you're buying it to impress your friends, either real or cyber. You'll be sorry when the next big whiz-bang thing comes out.

3) If you aren't a working professional who needs that large a file for magazines, advertising, etc. or at least a rich doctor who fancies himself a photographer but really isn't.

4) If you already have a large investment of another manufacturer's glass.

5) If you aren't prepared to double your expense (at least) to buy top Canon glass, because you'll need it. Lesser glass means the amazing image sensor on the camera will show the optical weakness of any lens you mount on it.

If you NEED a 1Ds, get one. They're fast, amazing, and incredible tools in the hands of a good photographer. In the hands of a rank amateur they're just an expensive toy that'll turn out larger files of cr@p than a less expensive camera.

Money, Money, Money and oh BTW, Money.

If they want to sell more units, they should lower the cost--PERIOD.

I must admit, I gotta problem with typo's

Actually the UK price is relatively closer to the US price than any other canon product, it's £5500 = $8800 which is far closer than the 1D is at £3300 where it's $3000 over there..

IF I was rolling in money, I'd get one and pay it but IMO it should be around £4000 UK

wish it cast $4000, like I wish the MiniCooper S cost $11,000
instead of $24,000?
Something like that yes - also It'd help make up for all the price gouging on lenses they do over here

and I said £4000 which is $6400

write up 30 other things you could do with the cash (and ad in allot more if you dont have any glass). Then red-line the ones you would do less rather then have the camera :) if you have a page of lines and all are redlined youre fine to buy it :)

If it can't even survive the impact from a 16-pound sledgehammer wielded by a Hell's Angel high on PCP, what good is it?

If you have to ask this question, you should NOT be buying a 1DS - for all the reasons given in the previous responses.

If your really want higher image quality in a full-frame format, try shooting some Velvia with an Elan 7E (or even a Rebel.)

A camera that's better than the 1DS, at a much lower cost, is coming in the next few years.
Wait.

Save your money - or spend it on lenses, other gadgets, or donate some to charity.
Spend your time shooting more photos rather than lusting for better equipment.
