considering selling my a57 for a number of reasons including feeling abandoned by Sony in the midrange segment and lots of noise in pictures that had a lot of noise in areas where lighting was not really that bad. May go Nikon d5300. I have used the tool on here, but those were taken in a studio with relatively good lighting . Are there any sites where you can compare pics on lower light ?

nikon uses sony sensors, so not too sure you're going to get much better results.

i've never seen a site like the one you're looking for, but at cameralabs.com the reviews usually include at least a couple pics taken in darker surroundings. you could download and compare. the catch is i think that gordon there only compares JPG, not raw.

Could you post some examples?

Is it possible you are under-exposing?

Even 1/3 F stop under-exposure can introduce a lot of noise, especially if the camera meter is already set by the manufacturer to under-expose a bit to preserve highlights.

In all honesty, the best thing is to download some RAW files from the cameras you're interested in and put them through your usual workflow to see how they perform for you and if you like what you see. You know what your current camera looks like, so playing with the RAWs directly will give you the best comparison to work with and you also know that the settings used in the conversion are what you'd use yourself, not someone else's preference.

I typically use RAW samples from Photography Blog reviews as well as Imaging-Resource when they make them available.
