Samsung NX30 - NX300 - NX2000 - Baseline AVC Codec - Really?
2

The samsung NX30, NX300, and NX2000 are using the baseline profile for the AVC codec used for video capture.

What does this mean? It means that you are not getting the quality of video that you deserve from these cameras, especially considering that until the NX1 appeared the NX30 was the flagship model.

AVC (aka H.264) is the compression codec commonly used for high quality video compression, this is what makes it possible to capture a large amount of data such as HD video and efficiently make the file sizes smaller but maintain quality. The AVC codec has many configuration options, but the one that concerns this problem is the “profile”, this comes in many flavours but most commonly used (in order of worse to better image quality) Baseline, Main & High. The baseline profile of the AVC codec is supposed to be used for low end video devices such as web-cams, it is not intended for use in an expensive camera that is supposed to be, and marketed as high quality. More commonly used for Full HD video is the High profile of the AVC codec. Other options such as the lack of CABAC will also adversely affect the quality, again this has been omitted from the three Samsung cameras in question, the NX30, the NX300 and the NX2000.

Read all about it at a blog I created purely to address this problem:

I hope I can count on your support, and I hope that dpreview might take an interest.

Cheers for now, Paul.
