I do not own the 17-40, but this subject has come up elsewhere. The new 16-35 f/4L IS is superior, but I don't have any hands on info comparing it to the f/2.8 versions.

I own the 16-35/4L IS and the 16-35/2.8L II and compared them before purchasing the IS. As others said before at 16f4 the 16-35/4L IS is not primarly better in the extreme corner. It is but that's not the main point. It's the area between center and corners where the (my) 16-35/2.8L II looses badly. Things get a lot better for 16f11 and for the other focal lengthes at f4 and surely f11 regarding the 16-35/2.8L II which I continue to like a lot.

Yeah, that matches up with my research and tests. The centers of all these lenses looks good across the board. And even my old 16-36 v/2.8 version 1 looks pretty darn good at f/8 and f/11.

But those edges and corners when shooting at f/4--what a difference!
