Will the Air kill off the GM line? I can see a lot of people (me included) no longer looking at any GM's and instead casting eyes towards the Air.

You're having a laugh, right?

I think the Sony QX might have poisoned the well for this type of product, so the Olympus version is going to have to be very good indeed to overcome people's low expectations.

Personally, for the very odd occasion I take a selfie, my iPhone 6 is just fine.

If I want to take a photo of something else, I'll pull out my GM5.

Excellent cheap, used GM's being dumped by people with short attention spans. :-D

I have the Sony QX10, the initial concept. Aside from putting it into holes in the ground and shooting people planting tulips or picking up golf balls, I haven't found a compelling reason to take it out and shoot pictures.

An Air with the bodycap fisheye would be very good for the occasional hole in the ground picures. I could see a nice opportunity for Groundhog Day in the USA. EVeryone shoots the little animal looking down at it. How about looking the other way?

These cameras when hand held and not mounted on a phone, are quite awkward to aim and compose, but that is probably a matter of practice. If the Air were cheap, I would pick one up as an accessory.

Hopefully, they would provide an Android and an iPhone app that wokd better than the camera app's I've seen for the Samsung Galaxy. Camera apps I've seen have horrible lag and imprecise control.

No, the ergonomics and usability in fast shooting with the Air will be absolutely atrocious. Even if it is ten times better than Sony's crappy QX offering it will still fall well short of a properly designed camera body like the GM cameras. When I'm out with my GM1 it is usually to take photos of my daughter and quick shooting is critical for that.

It does look like it could be a very interesting product on its own, but it will all come down to the implementation. The Sony QX line is so wickedly horrible it might be unfair to assume the Air will be as bad as that. But the QX has exposed a number of very hard to workaround issues with the concept. Anyway, glad to see Olympus giving it a try - would be happy to see them come up with something more workable than what Sony did.

Have we met?

If there's raw support and a decent software API, I'd be super interested.

If it's dumbed down like the Sony equivalent, zzzzzz....

This kind of thing should be the gateway for camera companies to finally figure out that they're in the computer business, and supply a way for users to access their optics (which they're great at) through innovative software (which they suck at).

As far as I know, the Sony is sensor + lens in one, nothing you can change, the Air is a sensor + mount, you can attach any mft lens you want. A big difference!

One of the QX series devices is an APS-C E-mount camera, running pretty much the same good sensor and image processor as in the otherwise abhorrent A3000:

I missed it too. It even has an API and shoots raw. I'll have to check it out.

I don't think it will replace any camera, but it does afford some flexibility in creative shooting. If you can attach it to a gorilla pod you'd be able to get some interesting angles that would otherwise have you doing acrobats. Maybe it would come in handy for product photography, too.

Does it do video?

I will have one on order just to play with it. Just deciding if I need the kit lens or not. I will be curious to see the new live view resolution for the app. This is extremely useful if in cases where you can shoot in auto mode and still get a decent image. there are some cases where you may not need to actually view what the camera sees. This has been a skill used by GoPro users for a while. Not sure if there is a capture button on the Air. Though it seems it may be device dependent because there is not SD card in the unit.

Japan has yet to realize that the rest of the world is not like them and people do more with their day than stare at a phone screen.

The connectivity is not so good. The major flaw seems to be not being able to connect to the internet while being connected to the camera. I will figure out more when I have one. The new apps are not available yet.
