It is interesting that this article is not widely distributed in the photographer community (at least I have not seen it anywhere), maybe because these sorts of analyses are usually proven wrong in a couple years, by the continuous and plodding improvements in technology.

@Tom, thanks for sharing the White Paper; I found it interesting reading, and the arguments for APS-C and more higher pixel density sound plausible to me, particularly the bit about Nyquist frequency

? The Nyquist frequency or the Nyquist rate?  I haven't read the paper so....

. Interesting, because this direction seems to be counter to what Canon+Nikon+Sony are currently doing, namely 'abandoning APS-C, while fleeing to FF'. Surely, these 2 approaches are so divergent they can't both be right?

Well, it's not that FF is a wrong move.  It seems to me that Samsung feels this is the sweet spot is all.  Also, while I'm not sure what Sony is up to... I don't see Canon or Nikon abandoning APS-C any time soon.  Nor Pentax, despite all the chatter in their forums.... really I think the FF ship came and left with no Pentax on board, I don't think it would actually be worth it for them to force the issue all these years later.  That is, I don't think it would generate them that many new sales, since the people that really wanted or needed FF are likely deeply invested in either Nikon or Canon.

For that reason, I expect some folks over on DPR's Photographic Science and Technology forum might find this white paper interesting (possibly more so than the readership of this forum).
