Thanks for all the replies.  Somehow, mysteriously, the exposure meter is working properly today.  I will have to get a grey card to make this type of troubleshooting easier in the future.  I'm sure it will also come in handy for it's typical usage also.

Also, in response to shooting in M instead of P: I was forced to shoot in M the rest of the day and check the LCD for exposure which worked well, but was slow.  For this post, I was trying to show what the camera wanted based on the built in exposure meter.  It's easier to show the picture than the "image" in the viewfinder where it says I'm over exposed, when it's actually going to expose correctly.

Anyway, if I have any more concerns, I'll post them.  Hopefully it was a fat finger setting problem, vs a sign of problems to come.  The T3 probably isn't the most durable camera.
