Nikon mirrorless future

I actually came across this thought while replying to another post on another thread.

If you look at where Nikon has put its development money over the past few years it is mostly two places.  Big, FF bodies and lenses and Nikon 1.

They have mostly ignored aps-c.  A few half-hearted, mostly spec sheet updates.  The D7200 is coming in a few weeks, most likely.  And no one expects it to be a world beater - it will be mostly a spec sheet update.   Same sensor as D7100, maybe upgraded process.  But mostly boring stuff.

Is Nikon purposefully not investing in aps-c DSLRs to clear the path for an aps-c mirrorless future?  It would make sense.  They have not put out any interesting aps-c glass since the 35mm f/1.8 lens.  And that has been quite a while.

Just a thought.
