Apart from techniques, my main suggestion, from shooting hummers for several years now, would be for you to consider *planting* for the birds, as opposed to using feeders. My favorite is malvavisco (Malvaviscus harboreus), which blossom all year round, but shrimp plants (Justicia brandegeeana) is another interesting possibility. There are many others, including Grevillea banksii, a prime favorite among hummers (and other bird species).

That way you'll avoid having to clean feeders (this is crucial) and preparing appropriate solutions, worrying about the 'correct' sugar dosage, etc. In addition, you'll have cleaner backgrounds for photos, won't have to crop out the feeders and will get more natural shots during the the whole period the hummingbirds are around (in case your species migrate).
