Hi guys. I'm buying a tripod for my Eos-M and SL1 cameras. I don't have very long telephotos and I like to have your opinion on my choice.

I do Portraiture, Landscape and Architecture photography so I need a sturdy tripod (I have a Manfrotto Pixi as a small one)

I like the freedom a ball head gives me, so I must have one. I also need a precise three way head for when I need my horison to be vertical and probably may need a panorama head for interiors.

Initially I wanted to get the manfrotto 190Xpro3 tripod because it is sooo nice. But it's also quite bulky and heavy. I almost bought a Benro A2680T + B1, but I really needed a pan head so I opted for the Xpro 3-way Manfrotto head. I haven't paid for them yet, so I decided to ask one more time if I made the right decision.

I have some very light and not very user friendly tripod which I've been using when I absolutely need one, which is well.. rarely. I plan to start using a tripod more so I was wondering what would you do and what is your setup?

For those cameras everything will do. I use a Velbon LUX-i L. Rated for 2.5kg/5.5lbs. It's very fast to deploy and dampens very quickly. I get pixel sharp results with my 300 f4 so I'd say it's good enough. Comes with a 3-way head too (and bubble levels!).

As for ballheads I can recommend the Sirui heads. I use a K series had (K-20X) but I think for a mirrorless setup that would be overkill (25kg/55lbs!). They have smaller/lighter one's that have a good reputation too.

Well. I just wanted a good and sturdy tripod to use on portrait photoshoots and for more precise work, but you might be right it's a bit of an overkill. I kinda feel that even the A2682 might be too heavy to lug around.

Unless you intend to shoot landscapes in adverse conditions (e.g. lots of wind), I'd go with a light solution. 2kg is a lot to carry. I think the Velbon I use is somewhere slightly above 1kg. Makes a real difference when you like to travel.

Btw. in terms of tripod stability, weight is only one factor. Another one that I personally find very important is how quickly a tripod stabilizes after a perturbation. For instance, most of the cheaper metal tripods tend to wobble around for quite a long time after you've touched the camera in spite of their enormous weight.

I highly recommend the MiFoto Globetrotter. It's amazingly compact, very light and very sturdy. I have had pocket tripods to a $1000+ manfrotto. I like the mifoto the best.

Check it out in a store if you get the chance. You'll be hooked when you hold it and use it. I always hated buying tripods as it wasn't a "fun" purchase like a camera was. The mifoto was my first tripod I actually felt good about spending the money on.

I recently purchased both the MeFoto RoadTrip and MeFoto GlobeTrotter; both in carbon fiber. I think the RoadTrip would be a good match for you. The GlobeTrotter would be good also; just a little larger/heavier. I paid $233 for my green CF RoadTrip from B&H on sale. Unfortunately, prices have gone back up ... but, they will come back down again.

We don't have mefoto here, but they are similar to Benro (Same brand) so I guess there won't be much difference. I really like the 190Xpro3 with the Xpre 3way head as a more precise and sturdy option and one small-ish travel tripod with a good ball head.

My options are Manfrotto Befree (not a good head), Benro A0681TB0, Sirui 055x, Sirui ET-1004+ET-10 head and for a big and sturdy tripod the Manfrotto Xpro - it's a really well machined piece of art.

The travel options are identical, excluding the 055x which is really tiny. I also have a Manfrotto Pixi for when I want to be really light.

Love your black and white LA video on Youtube. Nicely done.

I'd get a MeFOTO backpacker or the manfrotto BeFree. as your two best small travel tripod options.

there's also some half decent Chinese knockoffs out there that are actually quite nice.

what don't you like about the manfrotto befree head?

I actually didn't like the leg locks (up near the base) on the manfrotto.

I got the Cullman Nanomax 450 RW20 for travel.

I also got the Manfrotto 190Xpro3 for serious work.

I got two heads - the Sirui k30-X ball head - it's really good and has panning action (one of the things I didn't like about the befree)

I also got the manfrotto Xpro 3-way head in a bundle with the 190Xpro3 tripod as it was a good deal.

If I find I don't like the cullman and the 3-way head I will sell them and get any good travel tripod - either a manfrotto befree or even better - a sirui t1004x
