Re: What to get that will do as well as the old G9-G10 cxameras

I've had both the G15 and G16 and agree that the G15 is superb and fast, but the G16 is noticeably faster in every way. Focus is 50% faster than the G15 (according to Canon, and it seems so in use) and Continuous AF is faster at about 5.6fps. There are a host of other minor improvements that really do make a differenc in use, but that doesn't take anything away from the fact that the G15 is excellent as well. Personally, I much prefer my G16 and find that it's the camera I pick up 95% of the time. If I were to recommend a compact camera, the G16 is the one I'd recommend in a heartbeat.

Yes, the G16 is 45% faster than the G15 and has a faster processor, but the G15 is pretty darn fast-- Much faster than the G9 and G12 for example. Both cameras have the same lens, but the G16 uses a BSI CMOS sensor, while the G15 uses a standard CMOS sensor.
Great idea, I thought. However, it didn't seem to llve up to its promise. The camera lost some resolution and comparisons in the DPR studio comparison scene shows the G15 has more fine detail and is sharper. I believe that Canon increased the NR on the G16 to get better high ISO noise characteristics. And at ISO 3200 I believe that it does -- but only marginally. At all lower ISO's the G15 looks sharper and is slightly more detailed. Look and see...
So, while I had intended to buy a g16, I decided to stand pat and keep using my G15, and instead of the G16 I bought a G1X-II -- which I am thrilled with!. But the G15 is smaller and a very fine camera. Of course the G16 is a very fine and faster camera. But when you pixel peep, the G15 has the edge... which was more important to me. Can't go wrong with either one.
